Adversely affected employment at Apparel Textiles sector

Posted on the March 26th, 2010 under Textile by admin

Apparel Textiles industry of India is now moving on the stages of expansion though the development of technology. More and more investment is being done in this sector for the involvement of new and improved machinery specifically for raising the production and manufacturing levels and subsequently improving the end products.

Now, this reduces both cost of inputs and time but somehow this adversely affecting the employment sector, directly by declining the level of labor requirements in comparison to what it was, in the textile mills. Robotic, wider looms, latest processes of developing textile that doesn’t involves weaving and spinning and placement of computers to all the processes, reduces the need of more worker for producing similar amount of products.

Many apparel textiles mills and companies are willing to inaugurate modern textile plants that don’t require much labor force, lowering down the lesser efficient ones. As this scenario continues to exist, the overall requirement for material handlers and textile machinery operators too is being foreseen to get lower. On the other hand, the demand of skilled workers will get improving since operators are required to run advanced machines and equipments.

Another impact which can also be regarded as an important influencing factor for future employment patterns is the changing/fluctuating trade regulations. Since the apparel textiles manufacturing units is very much a labor intensive area, it is vulnerable to direct competition from all those nations where workers are placed on lower wage rate.

During 2005, apparel textiles and other product range quotas were up-lifted amongst the members of WTO, World Trade Organization, which included trading partners from US and China, in particular.

Few bilateral quotas can be seen re-imposed within China and US, but the expiration of the 2005 quotas has resulted in the import of more apparel textiles products in US. Since, variety of US companies will now be moving their operations to countries associated with lower wage rate. However, this particular trend will surely be affecting low skill machine operator jobs severely.

It is not having much effect over the demand of other processes like designing since most of the apparel textiles will be developed by designing through American workers.

Ongoing changes of the apparel goods market will be exerting pressures like cost-cutting affecting big bundle of workers at apparel textiles industries. Consumers too have become much conscious about prices and retailers have gained much power for bargaining with apparel textiles producers and rising competition in lowering down the ability of the apparel producers to pass over the costs to the customers.

Apparel textiles firms will be responding by resting over on foreign trade and production and up-grading productivity directly through investments in the new structures and technology.
